The United States of America annually imprisons a larger percentage of its people than any other nation -- about one in every 99!
At any given moment
, one in every 33 Americans is locked up, on probation or parole, or otherwise under the jurisdiction of the courts! Not all are guilty, as DNA testing continues to show, and not all are violent. And even people who lose their freedom for doing very bad acts have birthdays, observe holidays as best they can, and need to know that someone remembers them as human beings. Losing one's freedom is a very serious punishment -- it shouldn't mean losing touch with friends and family!

cards acknowledge the prisoner's situation, but reach out to men and women inside with humor and warmth. Most U.S. prisoners DO NOT have e-mail or internet access (so CANNOT receive "e-cards"), and often can't receive (or make) phone calls! Visitors are restricted, and prisons often far from a prisoner's home. "Snail Mail" is a good way to show you haven't forgotten!
